Devon and Cornwall Police

Devon and Cornwall Police cover the largest geographical area of any police force in England and is the fourth largest force in the UK. The total resident population is 1.5 million with 11 million tourists annually. The force is responsible for Devon, Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly.

    Wiltshire Police force covers a diverse area, including large towns and small villages. The third smallest force in the UK (after City of London and Warwickshire). Salisbury had its own separate police force until World War II when they were merged. Locations served by the force include:

    Gloucestershire Police

    Gloucestershire Police force covers a 1,025 square mile area. It was founded in 1839, six hours after Wiltshire Constabulary! The force in present form dates from 1974 when South Gloucestershire became part of Avon and covered by A&S Constabulary. Places served include:

    Gwent Police

    Gwent Police is a territorial police force based in South Wales which was formed in 1967 by the amalgamation of Monmouthshire Constabulary and Newport Borough Police. Among other places, it serves:

    South Wales Police

    South Wales Police is the largest force in Wales by population and strength. It is the seventh largest in the UK. It was formed after the amalgamation of: Glamorgan, Cardiff City, Swansea and Merthyr police. In 1996, the force lost the Rhymney Valley area to Gwent Police.

    Dyfed-Powys Police covers the largest geographical area in England and Wales. Despite the size of the area, the population is under 500,000 but is boosted considerably by large tourism numbers each year.     Lancashire Constabulary

    Police forces in the South East of England

    Metropolitan Police Service

    The largest force in the UK, Also known as "The Met", this force serves more than 8 million people and consists of more than 30,000 police officers. It covers 620 square miles, across 32 boroughs. Also known as 'Scotland Yard' as the headquarters used to have a rear entrance backing onto Great Scotland Yard.     City of London Police

    The City of London Police force is responsible for policing within the 1.1 square mile district of the City of London, Middle, and Inner Temples. By contrast with the Metropolitan Police Service, it is the smallest territorial police force in England and Wales both in terms of geographical area and head-count. As of 2019 the force had a workforce of 1,207 staff.

    Kent Police

    This police force is unique in that it has a station outside of the UK (Coquelles, France). The Port of Dover maintains its own independent police force but Kent Police have statutory responsibility for policing for the entire county. The Kent Police area covers 1,443 square miles including, among others:

    Sussex Police

    Sussex Police can be traced back to the first force established in Brighton in 1830. An interesting fact about the force is that in 1844 their chief constable was murdered by a prisoner he was interviewing, the only chief officer to suffer such a fate. Sussex Police are responsible for 1.6 million people and covers areas including:

    Surrey Police force covers an area of 642 square miles and was founded in 1851. It is responsible for an area to the south west of the Metropolitan Police, some areas originally part of the Metropolitan Police District. Areas are including:

    Essex Police

    Essex police force is one of the largest non-metropolitan forces in the UK. It covers around 1,400 square miles and serves more than 1.7 million people with over 2,900 police officers.     Thames Valley Police

    Thames Valley Police force covers the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire. It is one of the largest territorial forces in England, covering 2,200 square miles and a population of over 2.1 million people. In April 2011, the force adopted a Local Policing Model and is split into 12 LPA's each led by a superintendent.

    Bedfordshire Police is a relatively small force, the 8th smallest In the UK. As of 2017, the force has a workforce of 1,136 police officers, 859 police staff, 63 police community support officers, 60 designated officers and 195 special constables. It covers the areas of:
